Google saves the day

So, my amazingly talented mother in law made a beautiful twirly dress for Ellie. She wore it once and it was gorgeous.....she loved it.....

THEN Mommy washed it AND dried it.......and horror of horrors, the bottom skirt part bled into the top white part.....badly. It was entirely pink and tie-dyed looking.......and worse, it was now set in. (This picture doesn't do the damage justice......it looked way worse in real life)

So, I set off to google the answer.......AND IT WORKED!

So, if you have red fabric dye that is set in with the dryer, fear not! Here is the miracle-answer!!!!

Mix 1 Tbs. ammonia with 1 tsp. dish soap (I used dawn), with 4 cups warm water. Soak for 30-45 minutes.

Done!!!

Here's my relief. Perhaps I can stay in the family now! :)

Question now is: Do I risk washing it again if it needs it?????

  1. I would try soaking the skirt part in a vinegar/water mixture to set the color before washing again. I've had good success with that for retaining colors and keeping them where they're meant to be. :). But I had no idea how to get out the color that bleeds when I haven't don't that so I love this post.

  3. I also recommend setting the color with vinegar in the red skirt. It may be bled out from that first wash, but may not be.

  8. Whew!!! Also, have you heard of Shout Color Catchers? Those are AWESOME!! Throw one of those sheets in the washer when you have newer clothes that could still bleed and the little sheet will absorb the dye and not the other clothes! It is amazing how dark the sheets will come out with certain loads! Then you just throw it away! We love them in our house!
