Book Review: "Unseen" by Dr. Jack Graham

I have recently joined a book review group through Bethany House Publishers. Through them I receive free books and I have the privilege of reviewing them on this blog as well as a distributors website.

The first book that I was able to review is entitled “Unseen: Angels, Satan, Heaven and Hell and Winning the Battle for Eternity” by Jack Graham. This book promised an honest and direct look at the spiritual warfare that we as Christians encounter on a daily, and even hourly basis, but that we choose to overlook, either out of ignorance or a mentality of wanting to stick our heads in the sand. In the beginning synopsis Dr. Graham urges us as Christians to not “brush this reality aside, thinking that what we don’t know, won’t hurt us. What we don’t know absolutely will hurt us, and hurt us in powerful ways.”

This book truly did deliver what it promised in a deep but very applicable way. What I appreciated about the way that Dr. Graham presents his material is the fact that he is not simply using his opinions and presenting them as fact. Everything that the author presents is backed up with scripture and truly made me think of things in the supernatural world in a new light. As Ephesians 6:12 states “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

The chapter that I particularly enjoyed is Chapter 4, entitled “Battle Gear.” This chapter takes a close look at Ephesians chapter 6, studying in depth about the spiritual armor that we are told to put on, on a daily basis. We often read this chapter in the Bible and even skim over it, but this chapter in “Unseen”  offers such hope to us believers. When people begin thinking about the evil powers that the Lord tell us exist in this world, such as angels and demons, and as we begin thinking about heaven and hell, it can become quite overwhelming. We are told not to have a spirit of fear. What Dr. Graham tells us in this chapter is to not neglect the armor of God. God WILL protect us and we do not have to live in a measure of fear throughout our lives.

Though I read this as an individual study, I like the fact that this book can easily be used in a group study. Each chapter is easily divided into readable sections and there are 5-6 discussion questions at the end of each chapter. I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars for its readability, its relevance, its originality and it relevance in our culture. We, as Christians do not often read books with this subject matter and I do feel that this is an important subject. Some may feel that this is not a relevant topic, but if we truly believe what Ephesians states, we know that this is actually an extremely relevant topic.

If you are looking for a book that studies a topic that we as Christians usually ignore, this is a wonderful study. I used it during my personal Bible study and it lends itself well to that type of study. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to read “Unseen” by Dr. Jack Graham.
